Northern LABC Building Excellence Awards 2016

Northern Award winners march on to the Grand Finals (2017 details to follow shortly)

Award finalists from Cumbria, Tyne & Wear, and Tees Valley were among more than 350 guests at the Northern LABC Building Excellence Awards. The Friday 8 July event at the Hilton Hotel Newcastle Gateshead was attended by local builders, agents, contractors, architects, designers and local authority building control representatives.

A total of 14 winning and 12 highly commended projects and individuals were announced at the awards, where trophies and certificates were presented by representatives of LABC sponsors FMB, Home&Build, InstaGroup, Jewson, Polypipe Terrain, TLX, LABC Acoustics and LABC Warranty.

LABC awards are all about the essence of good buildings, with finalists judged not on architectural beauty, but on the “excellence” shown from a construction and technical building control point of view. They celebrate the design and construction teams that, having tussled with technical issues and difficult sites, found innovative and creative solutions.

Award categories cover a whole range of projects, rewarding everything from the best extension, local builder or traditional craftsperson and conversion through to the best new housing development, public service building, inclusive building and partnership with a local authority building control team.

Dawn McQuillan, Chair of LABC Northern Region, said: “These awards are an opportunity for us to celebrate the very best construction in the north of England, recognising the high level of skill and professionalism the building industry is capable of reaching. The awards demonstrate that local authority building control provides a high quality service to many of the region's finest construction professionals.”

Winners automatically qualify for the Grand Finals, which this year take place on 28 November in London. View the successful projects and individuals and download photos of the Northern Awards free of charge.

During the awards, more than £2,100 was raised for LABC President Jayne Hall’s chosen charity YoungMinds, which is committed to improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people.
