We were in Plymouth on Friday, hosting a sold out event for over 350 construction industry professionals. The reason? To celebrate outstanding construction in the LABC South West Building Excellence Awards 2017.
As well as the building control teams, representatives from all sorts of companies involved in construction were in attendance - housing developers, property managers, designers, architects, and more were our guests at the Holiday Inn, close to seafront.
What are the LABC Awards for?
The LABC Awards showcase some of the high quality work being carried out by building and design teams who have had to deal with tough technical or construction issues and constraints they've encountered on site. They shine a spotlight on the unique and creative solutions these teams have come up with and their professionalism with regard to the Building Regulations that leads to safe, energy efficient and excellent construction projects.
And the winners were...
On the night there were 14 winners and 15 highly commended, with projects ranging from a private cottage to an Olympic Legacy swimming pool and a beach-side inn and spa.
The LABC awards are a level playing field where local, regional firms have as a good chance of winning as large companies, were out in force at the South West awards.
Award trophies and certificates were presented by representatives of LABC's sponsors Home & Build, FMB, Jewson, Polypipe Terrain, TLX Insulation, Swiftclean, The Gas Safety Trust, LABC Acoustics, and LABC Warranty.
All regional winners qualify for the Building Excellence Grand Finals which this year are taking place on Friday 10 November at the Westminster Park Plaza in London. (You're advised to book your places early.)
It's all about team-working
The LABC awards also highlight the great results that can be gained from great partnerships and team-working. Paul Everall, Chief Executive of LABC, said: “Our Building Excellence Awards are an opportunity for the industry to celebrate good practice.
"Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local authority building control teams achieves high quality, sustainable buildings. Our awards are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry.”
LABC's charity of the year - Pancreatic Cancer UK
The evening's attendees helped us raise £2529 for Pancreatic Cancer UK, a charity close to the heart of this year's President Richard Scott who has seen first hand the devastating effect pancreatic cancer can have on families. (To find out more about the charity and Richard's own efforts to raise money for it, visit the LABC Charity of the year page.)
