South West LABC award winners announced (2017 Entry details to follow shortly...)
The Holiday Inn Plymouth was the place to be last Friday (July 1) as the South West of England’s building industry gathered to celebrate innovative construction. Finalists from Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset were among more than 350 guests at the region’s LABC Building Excellence Awards.
A total of 15 winning and 15 highly commended projects and individuals were announced at the event, where trophies and certificates were presented by representatives of LABC sponsors FMB, Home&Build, InstaGroup, Jewson, Polypipe Terrain, TLX, LABC Acoustics and LABC Warranty. Winners automatically qualify for the Grand Finals, which this year take place on 28 November in London.
South West Regional Chair Nigel Hunt said: “LABC awards allow us to showcase the very best examples of construction throughout the South West and recognise the high levels of skills and professionalism the building industry is capable of reaching. Being short-listed for an LABC award means a project has met, and in many cases exceeded, exacting standards set by LABC.”
LABC awards are all about the essence of good buildings, with finalists judged not on architectural beauty, but on the “excellence” shown from a construction and technical building control point of view. They celebrate the design and construction teams that, having tussled with technical issues and difficult sites, found innovative and creative solutions.
Award categories cover a whole range of projects, rewarding everything from the best extension, local builder or traditional craftsperson and conversion through to the best new housing development, public service building, inclusive building and partnership with a local authority building control team.
During the awards, more than £1,700 was raised for LABC President Jayne Hall’s chosen charity YoungMinds, which is committed to improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people.
