Chimney construction: Seasonal work for a new LABC Registered Detail

News
Chimney on a roof with snow

We’ve recently been approached by a specialist company looking to install their innovative system into every house by this time next year.

Due to the nature of the design we’ve struggled to find anyone with the specialist knowledge to undertake the Research Authority work on behalf of LABC.

We’ve offered guidance to the company on likely appropriate testing. It’s already been widely installed around Europe, particularly Scandinavia, and our biggest challenge was ensuring compliance with Approved Document Q Security – dwellings.

We’re now looking for anyone with experience in chimney construction to work with the company to start the nationwide installation as soon as possible. The company have insisted that a confidentiality 'claus' is signed to protect their copyright design and there will be penalty clauses and potential 'libell' action if the operating mechanism is released into the public domain.

Essentially the chimney is designed to accommodate expansion of the flue and chimney pot to permit surges in its capacity as and when needed. Frequency of this is low and likely to be only once a year at most.

The same company is also considering a ‘simple to install roof upgrade’ to improve load-bearing capacity of conventional roofs and we may be looking for additional assistance with this as well.

A prototype model has been developed and is shown further down the page.

If you have the necessary skills and are interested in participating in the scheme please do let us know.

In the meantime may the team at LABC wish you all a very Merry Christmas?
