About Us

North Yorkshire Building Control Partnership (NYBCP) was the first Local Authority Building Control Partnership in the UK. We provide a flexible and modern building control service on behalf of Hambleton, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough and Selby Councils. We process Building Regulation applications under the provisions of Section 91 and 92 of the Building Act 1984. In addition to Building Regulations, we undertake work in relation to dangerous structures and demolition notifications across the Partnership area. We have a wealth of experience and knowledge across all types of project and construction techniques, and encourage innovative solutions.

The Role

Can you help towards effectively delivering the Building Control function throughout North Yorkshire? The Partnership requires a Building Control Surveyor/Assistant Surveyor to help ensure that appropriate buildings meet the regulatory standards in safety, sustainability, accessibility and design. You will need to be a team player, able to prioritize a busy workload and demonstrate a proactive approach to plan assessment and site inspection work, checking compliance with Building Regulations and associated legislation.

Assistant/Building Control Surveyor

The Capital Delivery & Facilities Management service is tasked with making the Kirklees economy more resilient and better able to adapt to economic and environmental pressures and challenges. It does this by developing and delivering integrated strategic plans and services to stimulate economic and environmental activity. It also carries regulatory functions and aims to create fair conditions for businesses to operate.

You will undertake duties relating to building regulations and other associated legislation within a Building Control Section and provide support to Junior Officers.

Requirements for this job:

  • Knowledge of building regulations
  • Experience in Building Control/Regulatory Work
  • Ability to carry out all types of domestic and residential inspections
  • Ability to determine new dwelling and simple commercial applications
  • Ability to deal with dangerous structures following assessment by a senior colleague
  • Familiarity of basic computer software
  • Understanding of competition in the Building Control market
  • Ability to carry out inspections in varying weather conditions including working at heights, exactions and in roof spaces, and working in defective and dangerous buildings
  • BTEC Higher National Certificate / Diploma or degree in Building or equivalent

It is essential that you hold a full and valid driving licence and be willing to pass the Kirklees driving test; it is expected that you will either use a council vehicle or your own car to travel to and between sites.

If you want to join our friendly team you should hold a HND in Building Studies or equivalent and have previous experience in a Building Control organisation. You should also be willing to undertake further training as necessary.

Ideally, you should have experience in all aspects of Building Control work with a proven track record of determining domestic and commercial Building Regulation applications. A Building Surveying degree and membership of a recognised professional body such as RICS, ABE or CIOB would also be an advantage.

The role

We are working together to provide a shared service across our two authorities, which makes for an exciting and varied working environment in a beautiful part of Suffolk. An exciting opportunity has recently become available for which we require a person with drive and determination to join our dedicated Building Control team.

We are looking for a hardworking and confident individual with an HNC or degree in a suitable construction related subject wishing to develop and pursue a career in building control.

Reporting to the Senior Building Control Surveyors you will be expected to advise, negotiate and instruct builders, developers, property owners, agents and the general public to enable compliance with the Building Regulations by telephone, in person, in the office or on site.

Good communication and influencing skills with the ability to deal effectively with people, sometimes in difficult circumstances are essential.
