How to enrol 

Please be aware of the following steps prior to booking onto the course:  

LABC Members 

  • Step 1 - Register your interest and complete the application form. 
  • Step 2 - The tutor will review and a coordinator will confirm course suitability. 
  • Step 3 - For fully funded learners, the LABC team will issue a funding agreement to be signed and confirm your enrolment on the course. For paying learners, once course suitability is confirmed you will need to book your place on this webpage. 

Industry Professionals 

  • Step 1 – Email learning@labc.co.uk to request an application form. You will then be sent login details for our Virtual Learning Environment where you will submit your application.  
  • Step 2 - The tutor will review and a coordinator will confirm course suitability. 
  • Step 3 - Once course suitability is confirmed you will need to book your place on this webpage. 

Course Details 

Developed in response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry (Phase 2, Recommendation 18).  

Our Fire Engineering Principles programme brings together leading fire safety experts to strengthen your ability to understand, interpret and critically assess fire-engineered solutions. Delivered over 11 half-day workshops, it reflects the latest thinking, research and practical experience, giving you the skills to evaluate fire strategies, provide clear, evidence-based feedback to designers and engineers, and stay aligned with building legislation, British Standards and evolving regulations, helping you to remain confident and effective in your role. 

By the end of this programme, you will be able to 

  • Understand the requirements of building legislation in relation to fire safety, and how fire engineering principles can be applied to achieve compliance. 
  • Recognise the role and processes of the fire engineer, and the responsibilities of stakeholders when fire-engineered solutions are used. 
  • Interpret and critically evaluate fire-engineered designs and strategies against legislation and guidance. 
  • Form sound, evidence-based conclusions on compliance and safety. 
  • Provide clear, professional feedback to fire engineers, justifying conclusions and concerns.

  • Scene setting (introduction, vocabulary, and basic understanding ) 
  • An overview of BS 7974 
  • Introduction to qualitative and quantitative design 
  • Understanding CFD 
  • Smoke ventilation in residential areas 
  • Smoke ventilation v smoke Clearance 
  • Structural fire engineering 
  • PAS 8700 
  • Radiation analysis 
  • Accessible MOE / Alteration and /or working with existing buildings 

All learning, lectures and assignments will take place via distance learning on the LABC Virtual Learning Environment. 

  • Tutor Led Learning: Online interactive lectures with facilitated activities. We recommend that you attend all lectures but understand that this isn't always possible. All lectures will be recorded and made available to those students who are not able to attend. So, if you miss them, you can always catch up later at a more convenient time / day. 
  • Self-directed study: Required on top of the lectures should include e-learning, researching, studying, working on the assignment. 
  • Assessment: Participants are required to complete an online assignment that is assessed on a pass/merit/distinction/fail criterion.  
  • Support: Participants will be supported throughout the course by the Learning and Development Specialist and Course Coordinator.  

Who should apply? 

  • This course is designed for experienced building inspectors, principal contractors, principal designers, Tier 1 contractors, the fire and rescue service, structural engineers and other construction professional with responsibility for assessing and ensuring fire safety in buildings.

  • Fully funded for local authority building control members in England 
  • £1035 for local authority building control members in Wales (subsidised from £2590) 
  • £2590 for industry professionals (please note a discount is offered to those working in blue light services or within NFCC. Please email learning@labc.co.uk for further information)
