LABC Building Excellence Awards 2025 winner: Best Residential Conversion or Alteration to an Existing Home

LABC is delighted to announce that the WINNER of the Best Residential Conversion or Alteration to an Existing Home is Old Gwernyfed, Powys.

The restoration and extension of Old Gwernyfed, a Grade I listed manor house in Powys, has transformed the remains of a 17th-century wing into a contemporary living space. The project involved glazing the entire end of the existing ruin and installing a bespoke glass and oak staircase, blending modern design with historic character. The scheme protected the ancient monument while creating a unique home that exceeded client expectations and was completed in time for a special family occasion.

Powys Building Control provided outstanding professionalism, local knowledge and technical expertise on a complex two-year project. Exceeding minimum standards, the extension connects to a biomass heating system and uses sustainable materials such as woodwool boards, sheep’s wool insulation, and hemp lime plaster. This collaborative approach ensured compliance, safety, and exceptional craftsmanship on a highly sensitive restoration.

The judges praised this project for its sensitive approach to restoring a historic building.

“This stunning conversion creates an extraordinary living space, with the entire end of the existing ruin glazed and a bespoke staircase made from glass and oak. Due to the sensitive nature of this Grade I Listed building, implementation of building regulations had to be applied with care and due diligence to avoid compromising the ancient fabric.”
