Solid wall insulation solution

Solid wall properties are often classed as ‘hard to treat’ and have traditionally been considered expensive to insulate. But there are solutions that can protect such properties from the elements, helping to retain heat when it’s cold and maintain a cooler interior in warmer months.

External wall insulation (EWI) is an option for your customers. An EWI system involves the installation of an insulating layer to the external fabric of an existing or new building, and is usually finished with a render coat, brick slips or clad with timber boards or tiles. In addition to looking good, this solution requires little or no maintenance.

Other benefits of external wall insulation

  • Externally insulated, so there’s minimal disruption to occupants
  • Systems meet current thermal regulations and offer significantly reduced fuel bills
  • Breathable rock mineral wool systems allow for the removal of water vapour
  • The systems are durable and designed for the lifetime of the building
  • They prolong a building’s life
  • They reduce carbon emissions associated with the dwelling

Consider the following when deciding on the EWI system: the level of thermal performance required; the insulation type and which external finish best suits the style or location of the property.

Remember, this will need a Building Regulations application and the completed wall will need to achieve a thermal ‘U’ value of 0.30w/m2k. The correct installation of EWI requires careful detailing around windows and doors and around features fixed to the building such as rainwater and soil pipes - these will need to be removed and re-fixed. Incorrect fixing leads to problems with cold bridging, which will cause condensation and mould growth.

The best EWI solutions are either a rock mineral wool or expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation. Rock mineral wool is a non-combustible insulation, which means that fire barriers won't be needed while EPS insulation is an easy to install lightweight board.

EWI manufacturers such as Knauf Insulation offer both solutions. Many have a range of decorative renders that can refresh tired-looking buildings and leave your customers happy.
