Jason Hartwell was awarded the title of Non Residential Construction Professional of the Year at the Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards – one of the most recognised events in the building industry’s calendar.

A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects and teams from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability, safety and design.

Following the stunning refurbishment of the historic Middlesbrough Town Hall (pictured above), Jason was recommended for this prestigious award by his colleagues, and this was endorsed by the Building Control team at Middlesbrough Council. Jason held regular project design meetings pre-construction and throughout and arranged frequent building control site inspections. The project delivered specific targets for local and unemployed job starts, apprenticeships, graduate training and work placements.

Steve Fletcher, Head of Capital Projects, Middlesbrough Council said, "I’ve never worked with a project manager as good as Jason Hartnell. His passion, commitment and attention to detail is a credit to Kier. He has brilliant leadership qualities and has been the stand out person on this project which has made it a success. We are extremely happy with the outcome and the quality is superb."

The panel of expert judges said,
"Jason has shown himself to be a true leader and has been inspirational to his team with his ‘can do’ attitude. On this extremely technically challenging project, involving a careful balance of de-risking the project for Kier and engaging with the client to showcase our strength, he has navigated through countless issues to ensure a win-win situation for both Kier and Middlesbrough Council."

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said,

"It is always a pleasure to recognise individuals that go the extra mile as part of their role. My congratulations to Jason, on behalf of everyone at LABC. It’s a testament to his skills and dedication. He is a deserving winner of the Non Residential Construction Professional of the Year award.

"Our awards are an opportunity for the industry to celebrate good practice and they are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings."

The Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Friday 8 November 2019 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London and was hosted by multi award-winning comedian Milton Jones. 840 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 15 hotly contested categories.

These awards showcase buildings and design teams that tussle with complex technical or construction issues and building site constraints. They highlight innovative and creative solutions and building control professionalism that leads to safe, sustainable and high quality construction projects. Sponsors of the 2019 awards included Abbey Pynford, Actis, FMB, Home and Build, Jewson, Keystone, Keylite, LABC Acoustics, LABC Warranty, Planning Portal and Polypipe Building Services.
