More than 750 leading construction industry figures attended the LABC Building Excellence Awards at the Westminster Park Plaza Hotel to acclaim best practise, quality and standards in construction.

These were the first Building Excellence Awards since 2019 following the global pandemic and LABC has revised the awards to focus more on professional skills and competence – dividing the awards into two: ‘people’ and ‘places’.

A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects and teams from around England and Wales to showcase solutions to complex technical or construction issues, site constraints, technical innovation and the building control professionalism that leads to safe, sustainable and high quality construction projects.

LABC is delighted to announce the winner of the Best Public or Community Building is the Stoneham Park Primary Academy, Eastleigh, Hampshire.

Stoneham Park Primary Academy is the pilot project for the Hampshire standard model ‘schoolhouse’. Conceived as a lean, compact and energy efficient building it is modest in scale and future-proofed for expansion, built to serve a new housing development of 1,100 homes in Eastleigh. The design prioritises a quality education environment within a sustainable building constructed using, off-site manufactured timber frame system. Solar panels offer a renewable source of energy. As a result of the collaborative working between the whole team, the project was successfully delivered on time, on budget and to a very high standard – despite numerous challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic, weather and Brexit.

Congratulating the team, Lorna Stimpson, LABC Chief Executive said,

“These new style awards reflect LABC’s new focus on skills, quality and competency and reflect the best in construction from a technical perspective. Here, excellent communications were maintained between the whole project team and building control to make sure this new timber frame system was compliant and met regulations. The design team held numerous coordination meetings with the Building Control Partnership (BCP) to demonstrate the ‘fabric first’ and prove its compliance.”
