Press Release
Battersea Power Station, London

More than 900 leading construction industry figures attended the LABC Building Excellence Awards at The Grosvenor House Hotel, London to celebrate best practice, quality, and exemplary standards in construction.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards focus on professional skills and competence, as well as exemplar projects with categories for ‘People’ and ‘Places.’

A panel of industry experts judged a selection of the highest quality projects, professionals, and teams from around England and Wales to showcase solutions to complex technical or construction issues, site constraints and technical innovation. The awards highlight the vital contribution public sector building control teams make as part of the project team, ensuring safe, sustainable, and high-quality construction projects.

LABC is delighted to announce that the WINNER of Best Public or Community is Battersea Power Station, London.

After undergoing an extensive eight-year restoration, Battersea Power Station has been transformed into a diverse mixed-use destination. The location is made up of 254 apartments, 565,000 square feet of office space, and over 100 shops, bars, restaurants, and leisure venues, serving as a new town centre for Wandsworth. The Grade II* listed building, dormant since 1986, has a brand-new lease of life. Unrivalled in its ambition and scale, no detail has been missed in the delivery of Battersea Power Station as a world-class neighbourhood for residents, shoppers, workers and visitors.

The LABC public service building control team at London Borough of Wandsworth have worked tirelessly from the start of the project in 2004 to the project's completion and public opening. What started with one team member, overtime, expanded into a dedicated Building Control team with great knowledge of the intricacies of this complex project. Their dedication has fostered a culture of exemplary service, consistently going above and beyond in their efforts due to their passion, commitment, and professionalism towards this iconic development.

Congratulating the whole team on their success, Lorna Stimpson, LABC Chief Executive said:

"I firmly believe that one of the best ways to see more good work is to praise building excellence and publicly acknowledge companies, designers, site managers and tradespeople who go that extra mile."
