Robert Wiseman

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Robert Wiseman, a respected colleague and a steadfast advocate for Local Authority Building Control.

Robert began his career in civil engineering, including a period working in Saudi Arabia. He joined Building Control in the late 1980s as an Assistant Building Control Officer at Maidstone Borough Council before moving to Rochester City Council, which later became part of the Medway Unitary Authority.

In 2007, the STG partnership was formed to deliver Local Authority Building Control services across Kent on behalf of Canterbury City Council, Gravesham Borough Council, Medway Council and Swale Borough Council. Robert joined the partnership and continued to build the strong professional relationships and reputation for which he became so well known.

A decade later, in 2017, Robert returned to Maidstone Borough Council as Building Control Manager. He continued to work closely with colleagues across Kent, hosting many of their meetings over the years and playing an active role within the wider LABC South East region.

Throughout his career, Robert developed excellent relationships with builders, architects and fellow professionals alike. Within the office, he was renowned for his friendly manner, willingness to chat and, of course, his love of biscuits.

His team at Maidstone remember him as approachable, personable and genuinely kind. Those qualities were recognised by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Robert was always willing to listen, easy to talk to and unfailingly calm, helping colleagues through many challenging and stressful situations.

He was immensely proud of his team and took a keen interest in every aspect of their work. Despite his management responsibilities, he loved nothing more than getting out on site visits, keeping his feet firmly on the ground and maintaining the professional knowledge and expertise that were so important to him.

Beyond his professional life, Robert's family meant everything to him. His colleagues at Maidstone feel fortunate to have experienced some of the warmth, care and generosity that he gave so freely and which he clearly shared with those closest to him.

Robert's passion for Building Control and dedication to the profession never diminished. His contribution to the industry, his friendship and his kindness will be remembered by all who knew him.

He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues and the wider Building Control community.
