LABC building control apprenticeships

This page contains information on local authority building control apprenticeships. Here you'll discover what it is that building control surveyors do, the entry requirements for the apprenticeship, information about building control qualifications, and much more.

First, what exactly do building control surveyors do?

As a LABC building control surveyor you'll be employed by a local authority in the capacity of enforcing the Building Act and Regulations. You'll typically work as part of a team including technical support administrators and other surveyors of varying expertise and experience usually reporting to a building control manager.

As part of your role, you'll provide an impartial, independent and accountable third party service certifying that building work achieves compliance with minimum standards, namely those set out in the Building Regulations.

Building control differs from other surveying roles in that building control surveyors perform what is essentially an enforcement function, ensuring compliance through the Building Act 1984.

In addition to construction technology, a building control surveyor requires a full working knowledge of the Building Regulations and associated legislation (in force at the time work has been carried out) in relation to areas such as structural, thermal, fire, acoustics, ventilation and inclusive design.

As this is a highly client-facing role you'll be an excellent communicator, diplomatic and assertive with the ability to remain impartial when using the powers conferred on you to prosecute if necessary to protect the health and safety of people, and the wider environment.
