The Tottenham Experience project wins Best Inclusive Building at 2019 LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final

Press Release
Tottenham Experience - LABC Building Excellence Awards

The project for the new Tottenham Experience, designed by F3 Architects and built by BASE Contracts, was awarded the title Best Inclusive Building at the Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards – one of the most recognised events in the building industry’s calendar.

A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability, safety and design.

Working with the building control team from the London Borough of Haringey, The Tottenham Experience (‘TE’) is located at the southern end of the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, providing a gateway to the state-of-the-art facilities for fans and visitors. F3 Architects designed and delivered Phase One of the TE, home to the new Spurs shop.

Encouraging interaction with visitors, the shop includes a 100-seat auditorium area, complete with a 36-screen video wall to host pre-match and post-match events, special appearances and promotions. Phase Two of the TE will comprise a new Spurs museum, café, stadium tours and skywalk, completing the year-round visitor attraction and creating a 365-day destination in the heart of Tottenham.

The project includes the restoration of Warmington House, a Grade II listed building which will house the club museum and archive and provide an exhibition space. A contemporary architectural intervention surrounding Warmington House blends old and new, showcasing the history of the Club from its beginnings to present day.

The Tottenham Experience goes well beyond complying with part M of the Building Regulations. The Club strove to set a precedent in inclusive design for stadia for things like visual and hearing impairment, autism and colour-blindness. This first phase includes a Changing Places facility, the first to be opened in this part of London.

The panel of expert judges said,

"This scheme represents an outstanding example of embedding a truly inclusive approach from the outset. The team employed a number of tools to make sure the highest standards of accessible and inclusive design were met including accessibility compliance audits, involvement of users via the Disabled Supporters Association and the employment of specialist access expertise.

"The scheme went beyond minimum requirements incorporating a publicly available Changing Places toilet and the building is as usable as possible for as many people as possible."

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said,

"Our Building Excellence Awards are an opportunity for the industry to celebrate good practice and they are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with public service building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings."

The Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Friday 8 November 2019 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London and was hosted by multi award winning comedian Milton Jones. Over 800 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 15 hotly contested categories.

These awards showcase buildings and design teams that tussle with complex technical or construction issues and building site constraints. They highlight innovative and creative solutions and building control professionalism that leads to safe, sustainable and high quality construction projects. Sponsors of the 2019 awards included Abbey Pynford, Actis, FMB, Home and Build, Jewson, Keystone, Keylite, LABC Acoustics, LABC Warranty, Planning Portal and Polypipe Building Services.
