LABC Building Excellence Awards 2023 winner: Best Partnership with a Local Authority Building Control Team

Press Release

More than 900 leading construction industry figures attended the LABC Building Excellence Awards at The Grosvenor House Hotel, London to celebrate best practice, quality, and exemplary standards in construction.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards focus on professional skills and competence, as well as exemplar projects with categories for ‘People’ and ‘Places.’

A panel of industry experts judged a selection of the highest quality projects, professionals, and teams from around England and Wales to showcase solutions to complex technical or construction issues, site constraints and technical innovation. The awards highlight the vital contribution public sector building control teams make as part of the project team, ensuring safe, sustainable, and high-quality construction projects.

LABC is delighted to announce that the WINNER of Best Partnership with a Local Authority Building Control Team is Andrew Fleet, MCIAT with East Cambridgeshire District Council.

Andrew submitted his initial application with East Cambridgeshire nearly 40 years ago in 1986. Since then, he has steadily progressed and is now on the verge of submitting his 1250th application to the Local Authority. This averages to more than one submission every fortnight for the past 37 years. Transforming from a small one-man practice, Andrew now oversees a team of five, including his son AJ, who is poised to continue the business legacy into the coming decades.

Andrew prioritises staying up to speed with regulatory changes and new legislation and is always the first to collaborate with East Cambridgeshire District Council, asking for key information and sessions to understand how these changes might affect projects. Andrew quickly updates his plans to match these changes, highlighting his proactive approach.

Congratulating the whole team on their success, Lorna Stimpson, LABC Chief Executive said:

"I firmly believe that one of the best ways to see more good work is to praise building excellence and publicly acknowledge companies, designers, site managers and tradespeople who go that extra mile."
