Having read the May 2019 SCOSS Alert on Failure of RAAC Planks (view LABC's article here), a structural engineer has contacted CROSS (Confidential Reporting on Structural Safety) to share their experience of working on projects with RAAC Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete planks.
In 2017, they were asked to investigate an RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) roof which had collapsed in a school. Luckily, there was no one in the classroom at the time of the collapse.
For the duration of the COVID-19 crisis LABC has closed its office and all employees are working remotely and are fully operational.
The telephone service is still working 020 8616 8120 and for general enquiries use our contact form at https://www.labc.co.uk/contact-us or email us at info@labc.co.uk

LABC’s Chief Executive, Lorna Stimpson, in a message to LABC members has said that only the most urgent construction work should be supported on site to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
She said, "In such a rapidly changing situation providing definitive advice is impossible, but the top priorities are your safety and that of your surveying team and to ensure that you are not placed in any unnecessary risk. Everyone must seek to minimise any possibility of transmitting the virus.
Lorna Stimpson: 'Properly funded public service building control is an investment.'

LABC Warranty have produced a resource 'Fire Safety for Relevant Buildings' that brings together fire safety legislation and guidance for a range of elements that make up the external wall/envelope of relevant buildings.
Aimed at architects, engineers, property developers, build contractors and facade consultants, the resource includes regulatory and LABC Warranty positions in relation to items in the following categories:
LABC is one of 28 construction industry organisations to back a joint action to tackle climate change. With the built environment accounting for 40% of carbon dioxide emissions as well as impacting on habitats and biodiversity the organisations have come together under the umbrella of the Construction Industry Council to set up a Climate Change Panel.
The panel will promote best practice, encourage innovation and provide advice and guidance to the industry on climate and biodiversity measures.
Almost all LABC building control teams (245 out of a total of 287) are now accredited with an independently audited quality management system. This means each team can demonstrate that its procedures, training and management meet the internationally recognised and consistent ISO standard.
The standards are supported by independent UKAS accredited audit and the LABC competency matrix which drives the registration of public service surveyors and technical staff and ensures proficiency.
LABC’s Learning and Development Team has walked off with a silver award at the 2020 international Learning Awards – organised by the Learning and Performance Institute.

The Construction Youth Trust have just launched a set of resources that will allow construction professionals to help students overcome barriers and encourage them to take up a career in construction.
Just 9% of young people would consider a construction job, according to figures published by housing association L&Q in 2019, and any initiatives aimed at encouraging students into a career in construction (and building control) are badly needed.
Congratulations to Anthony Oloyede who succeeded Dave Sharp as President of LABC for 2019-2020 at this year's AGM in Birmingham.
