A recent CROSS report detailed a situation where a reporter was asked to check the roof of a building which had been leaking for a few years but was still occupied. The roof consisted of flat cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels with falls provided by firing pieces with insulation and supporting marine ply under the single ply membrane.

The #BuildingAspirations campaign aims to encourage volunteers from the construction and built environment industry to reach out to young people and inspire them about the world of work.
Employer contact at school reduces the likelihood of young people becoming NEET (not in education, employment or further training). Young adults who remembered 'four or more employer contacts' are five times less likely to be NEET than those who had no involvement.

With all the main political parties making significant commitments to increase housebuilding, LABC has called on them to recognise changes to the industry are needed if any of the pledges are to be implemented.
So far, the Conservatives have pledged to build 1 million homes in the next five years, with Labour pledging 100,000 council and 50,000 affordable homes per year. The Lib Dems have set a target of 300,000 per annum (with 100,000 for social rent) and the Green Party wants to see 100,000 zero carbon homes built every year over the next decade.
Builders, architects and specifiers keen to gain insight into the latest developments in the construction world without the need to stray far off the M5 might fancy a trip to the latest LABC technical roadshow.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Finals took place at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London on Friday 8 November 2019. 840 guests attended the black tie event which was hosted by multi award-winning comedian and Mock the Week regular Milton Jones.

LABC supported the NHIC (The National Home Improvement Council) debate hosted by President Rt Hon Baroness Maddock in Parliament yesterday. Entitled healthy Homes and the Role of Refurbishment, the debate looked at what needs to be done to raise awareness and standards to ensure UK homes are healthy, safe and efficient.

The LABC awards are the largest business to business awards in the building control sector, and are back for their 2020 cycle, so if you have a project that completes in 2019 that you think stands out from the crowd when it comes to quality and building excellence this is your opportunity to put it forward.
LABC's annual President's Reception marks the handover from the current President to the holder of the post for the following year. This year's event, held at the Royal Society in St James' London, saw more than 150 guests journey back through the decades to celebrate 30 years since the formation of the District Surveyor's Association – the precursor to LABC.
